The Beauty of Change

My dorm has entered a season of much change. This is the last semster for girls to live in this building. Because of renovations that will be happening in another dorm, they are changing our dorm into a guys’ dorm. This created quite the stir when it was first announced a couple months ago as all the girls and myself would need to move to other dorms across campus. Aside from the change in location, most of the girls will be getting new hall directors, new RAs, and even new roommates.

When I was younger, I was never a fan of change. I was a planner and I liked to feel I was in control (still have tendencies towards both, but the Lord is continually refining me :)). Over the last thirty years, the Lord has been teaching me that I can’t stop change; like the picture above (taken by one of my students). Things are continually changing and there is beauty in each of the changes. “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. I’m not in control, but I can choose to find the beauty in each of the seasons and embrace the changes He allows!

The thing that gives me the most peace and joy in all of the changes is Malachi 3:6, “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” He is present in the midst of all of my changes. I can put my hope and faith into Him, because He won’t change! And because of who He is, my changes won’t consume me! My security in Him allows me to find the beauty and the adventure in every change!
